Why should you use Maurten?
Maurten was established in 2015, and then launched their first two products in 2017. The Drink Mix 160 and 320 took the endurance scene by storm. Both drinks contained a mix of carbohydrates, electrolytes and utilised their hydrogel technology making them comfortable on the stomach.
Maurten are based solely on natural ingredients. The use of hydrogel technology meant that Maurten could remove all the unnecessary ingredients and focus on improving the amount of carbohydrates, plus decreasing the risk of gastrointestinal issues.
HYDROGEL. WHAT IS IT?
Widely used within the food industry as thickeners or structurants. A hydrogel is a biopolymer, simply put, it looks and behaves a bit like a kitchen sponge. With its water-based structure and miniscule pores it has the ability to hold water.
Maurten have researched and developed a method to build hydrogels with natural food ingredients. And they’ve built the structure with the most efficient source of fuel around – carbohydrates.
The hydrogel in Maurten’s energy drink mix are built from the combination of Alginate and Pectin.
Alginate is found and extracted from the cell walls of brown algae. Whereas Pectin is found in fruits and vegetables such as apples, lemons, carrots, and tomatoes.
Both of these dietary fibres have been used for years within the food industry. Maurten have combined them both under perfect conditions to form a pH-reactive hydrogel. This means once your drink mix reaches your stomach, it reacts with the acidity of the stomach and converts into a hydrogel, protecting the carbohydrates.
Maurten patent pending approach is unique in the nutrition sector.
The hydrogel will then dissolve in the intestine, releasing the carbohydrates, salt and water which is then absorbed by the body.
DRINK MIX: HOW IT WORKS?
The drink instantly converts to hydrogel when it is in contact with the acidity of the stomach, protecting the carbohydrates in hydrogel. The hydrogel then enables a smooth transportation through the stomach to the intestine where the water, salt and carbohydrates are absorbed by the body.
GEL: HOW IT WORKS?
The Gel 100, Gel 100 Caf 100 & Gel 160 is a premade hydrogel however, it still relies on the same concept as the drink mixes, where the hydrogel technology enables a smooth transportation of carbohydrates through the stomach to the intestine where the carbohydrates are then absorbed into the body.
In the case of Maurten’s drinks, the hydrogel is formed inside the stomach. Whereas this is different with the GEL, as it is already a hydrogel, formed in production by combining sodium alginate and calcium carbonate.

Look below through our Maurten product reviews from customers:
Simon left a ☆☆☆☆☆ star review on the GEL 100 - Easy to open and no stomach issues. The gel consistency is a bid weird at first but great that the taste is neutral.
Suzanne left a ☆☆☆☆☆ star review on the GEL 100 - I used the gels for the second time for my Brecca Swim/run at the weekend and like before they were just amazing, easy to open, no sticky mess, desolve in the mouth and the energy levels are just perfect, I finished as fresh as I started. Over the years I have tried many different brands as I have awful stomach issues and Maurten have been perfect from the very first gel.
James left a ☆☆☆☆☆ star review on the GEL 100 CAF 100 - Light years ahead of the competition the gel has no sickly flavour sits very well in your stomach and provides that on the go energy needed for any tough race or training
Ben left a ☆☆☆☆☆ star review on the GEL 100 CAF 100 - Good fairly solid consistency, which I like. Flavour is clean and simple. You can feel the caffeine in a good way. I am not usually a gel fan but like these.
James left a ☆☆☆☆☆ star review on the DRINK MIX 320 - These drinks mixes are great for the morning of the race and the night before to kind of carb load in a clean and sensible way, they take a little getting used to drinking but if mixed how it says on the packet you have no issues.
Simon left a ☆☆☆☆☆ star review on the DRINK MIX 160 - Seriously good. Worth the money. Completely flavourless which is a bit weird.
