WHY SHOULD I USE A SPORTS SPECIFIC PRODUCT?
In days gone by, there would be a tube of thick white cream that would get taken from the back of the cupboard either for holidays or days when it was particularly hot – that was it. This ‘one size fits all’ mentality with sunscreen is changing due to advances in UV filter technology and products designed for specific usage – clearly your skin has different requirements on long runs than it does lying on a beach.
A lot of people don't wear sunscreen when they run or take part in other outdoor sports because they don't like how their 'usual' product feels or performs. Look for a formula that doesn’t block pores, with a lightweight and breathable consistency, – this is probably the most important factor given the rigours of high-intensity sports where the skin’s ability to breathe and sweat effectively is absolutely paramount. You also want something highly water and sweat resistant, meaning it won’t slide off or drip into your eyes during your workout (or after inclement weather than defines the British summertime!)
Look for products with an SPF (sun protection factor – how much protection you get from UVB rays) of 30 or more and with broad spectrum protection. Even with a high SPF, if a sunscreen isn't broad spectrum, you won't be protected from all UVA rays (which might not cause you to burn but penetrate more deeply into the skin and play a greater role in premature skin ageing). Also think about how long you intend to be training and the practicalities of reapplying mid-session, perhaps it's better to longer-lasting product. There is no one-size fits all, but not all sunscreen is created equally so take the time to find what works for you and what you want to achieve!
WHAT DO SPF LEVELS MEAN?
The Sun Protection factor (SPF) gives an indication of the amount of protection sun cream offers against UVB radiation. Many other factors will impact how long you can stay in the sun without burning, such as your skin type, eye and hair colour, where you are in the world, altitude and lots of other things.
After applying SPF 30, you are able to stay in the sun 30 times longer than you could without wearing sun protection. Be sure to wear the directed amount of sun protection (always more than you think, this should be around 30ml per application for an adult). Higher factors should not be used to increase your time in the sun.
A common misconception is that SPF 30 is twice as strong as SPF 15 and so on; this is not true. SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB radiation whilst SPF 30 blocks 97% and SPF 50 blocks 98%.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO TAN THROUGH A HIGH PROTECION FACTOR?
Wearing a higher sun protection means you will tan but just at a slower rate with less risk. Pelotan will also help your tan last longer because of the gradual tanning nature, rather than losing your sharp tan lines as quickly as you got them.
HOW LONG CAN I STAY IN THE SUN FOR?
Everyone is different and there are so many factors at play here including your location, skin type, time of the day, UV levels and altitude. Where possible, avoid extended sun exposure when the sun is at its hottest around midday (perfect time for a coffee…)

However, it is important to listen to your skin. Always be aware of the strength of the sun. Never exceed sun exposure for longer than your skin allows.
HOW SHOULD I APPLY PELOTAN?
For best results apply to clean dry skin. Apply evenly and generously 15 minutes before you head out, which will allow Pelotan to bind with the skin and form a protective barrier against UVA / UVB rays. When used correctly, one application is sufficient for all day protection giving you maximum comfort, however far you go.
IS PELOTAN PRODUCTS TESTED ON ANIMALS, AND ARE THEY SUITABLE FOR VEGANS / VEGETARIANS?
Pelotan is never tested on animals – they’re usually dreadful athletes anyway. We’re also proud to be a company that doesn’t buy ingredients that have been tested on animals by other manufacturers either. You can buy Pelotan confident that your sun care is cruelty free.
Pelotan does not contain any animal-derived ingredients or by-products and is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
CAN I USE PELOTAN ON MY CHILDREN?
Yes of course! Pelotan is safe for children. All of our ingredients have been approved as cosmetic ingredients and are perfectly safe for children. However, it is important to follow the general sun advice that young children should not be exposed to direct sun light and cover them with loose clothing and wide brimmed hats (a casquette probably not the one here…)
