The route

Over half of the 26.2 mile Windermere Marathon route is run on partially traffic free roads or roads with a dedicated running lane. With approximately +600 m of elevation, it is perfect for runners who want a road marathon with a real challenge and unforgettable scenery.

Start on the shores of Windermere

The route starts at Waterhead on the shores of Windermere, heading north before crossing the River Brathay, then turning south past Brathay and High Wray Castle.

Lakes, villages and Beatrix Potter country

You will run along the east lakeside of Esthwaite Water, through Near and Far Sawrey to the southern tip of Windermere, with views of Hill Top, the home of Beatrix Potter, and Lakeside.

Finish at Brockhole on Windermere

After crossing Newby Bridge, the route heads north on the east side of Lake Windermere, passing Bowness on Windermere and Troutbeck Bridge before finishing at the Great North Swim site at Brockhole on Windermere.

The finish line at Brockhole on Windermere sits in the heart of a vibrant event village where you can celebrate your marathon alongside Great North Swim finishers.
