Charles Bennett Olympic Mile Races 2016 @ Shapwick, Dorset
With the Olympics once again taking place this summer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Shapwick will be celebrating the achievements of Charles Bennett
Being Olympic year means only one thing in Shapwick the return of the Charles Bennett Olympic Mile Races 2016 in association with Bournemouth Athletic Club & Wimborne Athletic Club.
Being held on Saturday 13 August 2016, 2.00-5.00pm in Shapwich, Dorset set around the Charles Bennett Memorial Green.
Who is Charles Bennett?
Bennett, a train driver born in Shapwick, Dorset on 28th December 1870, Charles Bennett was a British athlete, winner of the 1500 metres at the 1900 Summer Olympics and the first British track and field athlete to become Olympic champion.
The Event
A series of one (1) mile races based around the Charles Bennett Memorial Green on Stewards Lane in Shapwick, the races will take place on a flat one lap course on lanes (closed to traffic) around the village.
Prizes will be awarded for the first 3 in each of the following categories:
- Under 10 Girls & Boys
- Under 17 Girls & Boys
- Under 20 Men & Women
- Senior (20-39) Men & Women
- Over 40, 50 & 60 Men & Women
