Vitamin D3 and Bone Health: Building Stronger Bones

Why does bone health matter?

Strong bones keep us standing up right, allow us to move, protect vital organs and store nutrients and minerals that keep us alive. This is why bone health is important for everyone, regardless of age.

People who don’t have strong healthy bones are at greater risk of breakage and fractures, as well as developing conditions like rickets and osteoporosis, all of which can lead to limited mobility.

A lot of people think that because older people are more likely to develop these conditions, they don’t need to worry about keeping their bones strong and healthy until they are older themselves. This isn’t true.

Looking after bone health is just as important for young people, this is because when we reach our 20’s our bodies stop producing new bone tissue, and as we get older we start to lose bone mass. Therefore, the earlier you start looking after your bones the better.

The Role of Vitamin D3:

Vitamin D3 (or Cholecalciferol) is a type of Vitamin D that is naturally synthesized in the skin when exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D3 can also be obtained from some food sources, however there are very few foods that naturally contain a significant amount of D3.

Food sources of Vitamin D3 include: Fatty fish, fish liver oils, beef liver, egg yolks, fortified foods (such as bread and cereal).

Vitamin D3 plays a crucial role in maintaining bone health by aiding in the absorption of Calcium & Phosphorus in the intestine, here’s how it works:

Calcium Absorption: Enhances the absorption of calcium from the small intestine into the blood stream. Having sufficient levels of Vitamin D ensures the right amount of calcium is absorbed.

Calcium Homeostasis: Vitamin D3 helps regulate calcium levels in the blood, maintaining a balance between the calcium stored in the bones and calcium circulating in the blood. This balance is essential for proper bone mineralisation- mineralisation is crucial for bone strength and structure.

Prevention of Rickets and Osteomalacia: Vitamin D deficiency can lead to conditions like Rickets (in children) and Osteomalacia (in adults)- these conditions are a result of weakened, soft bones, and can cause skeletal deformities.

Support for Osteoblasts: Osteoblasts are cells responsible for bone formation, Vitamin D3 support their function helping with synthesis and mineralisation of bone tissues.

Muscle Function: Vitamin D3 is also involved in muscle function, strong muscles give better support for bones and reduce the risk of falls and fractures.

Vitamin D3 Supplements:

Because Vitamin D3 is only present in small quantities in a small number of foods, the best way to ensure sufficient Vitamin D3 levels is to take a supplement.

Supplements provide a quick and easy solution to Vitamin and Minerals that we may be lacking in our diets.
