Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are three essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. They contribute to muscle protein, can be metabolised within skeletal muscle and may support muscle protein synthesis and recovery around demanding training.

BCAAs are three of the nine essential amino acids that the body cannot produce itself, meaning they must be obtained through food or supplementation. They are naturally found in protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, soya and other plant-based protein sources.

Leucine plays a particularly important role in signalling the process of muscle protein synthesis, while isoleucine and valine also contribute to muscle protein and amino acid metabolism. During exercise, BCAAs can be metabolised within skeletal muscle and used as an additional energy source.

For endurance athletes and fitness enthusiasts, BCAA supplements provide a convenient source of amino acids before, during or after training, particularly when consuming a complete protein serving is not practical. However, BCAAs should not replace carbohydrates during prolonged exercise or a sufficient daily protein intake.

Research suggests BCAA supplementation may help reduce muscle soreness following demanding or unfamiliar exercise. Evidence for improving endurance performance, building additional muscle or accelerating recovery is less consistent, particularly when an athlete already consumes enough high-quality protein. Complete proteins and essential amino acid products provide a broader range of amino acids required for muscle repair.

Our BCAA collection includes powders, tablets and other convenient formats for use around endurance, strength and fitness training. Products vary in their dose, flavour and ratio of leucine, isoleucine and valine, so they should always be used according to their specific directions.

Key Benefits:

  • Provides the essential amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine
  • Leucine supports the signalling involved in muscle protein synthesis
  • Can be metabolised within skeletal muscle during exercise
  • May help reduce muscle soreness following demanding training
  • Offers a convenient amino acid option before, during or after exercise

Support your muscle nutrition around training with our BCAA collection, designed to complement an adequate daily intake of protein and a balanced sports nutrition plan.
