B Corporation Certified: What is it?
B Corp Certification is a third-party standard requiring companies to meet social sustainability and environmental performance standards, meet accountability standards, and be transparent to the public according to the score they receive on the assessment.
B Corp Certification applies to the whole company across all product lines and issue areas.
B Impact Assessment
Companies that earn a minimum score of 80 out of 200 points on an initial assessment undergo an assessment review process. Companies must provide supporting documentation before they are certified.
The assessment covers the company's entire operation and measures the positive impact of the company in areas of governance, workers, community, the environment, as well as the product or service the company provides.
Socially and environmentally focused business model points are accrued in the relevant impact areas (governance, workers, community or environment). Depending on a company's industry, geographic location, and number of employees, the online assessment adjusts the weightings of the question categories to increase its relevancy.
To maintain credibility, the B Corporation certification standard operates under principles that are independent, comprehensive, comparable, dynamic, and transparent. B Lab oversees certification and has an established standards advisory council that can independently make decisions with or without the support of B Lab.
The 5 categories of assessment are:
Governance:
Evaluates a company's overall mission, engagement around its social/environmental impact, ethics, and transparency as well as the ability of a company to protect their mission.
Workers:

Community:
Evaluates a company’s engagement with and impact on the communities in which it operates, hires from, and sources from, including diversity, equity & inclusion, economic impact, civic engagement, charitable giving, and supply chain management.

This section also recognizes companies with environmentally innovative production processes and those that sell products or services that have a positive environmental impact.

In addition, this section recognizes products or services that are designed to address a particular social problem for or through its customers, such as health or educational products, arts & media products, serving underserved customers/clients, and services that improve the social impact of other businesses or organisations.
