Beta-alanine is an amino acid used by the body to produce carnosine within skeletal muscle. Higher muscle carnosine levels help buffer changes in acidity during intense exercise, which may delay fatigue and support performance during sustained or repeated hard efforts.

Beta-alanine is a naturally occurring amino acid. Unlike many amino acids, it is not used to build muscle protein. Instead, it combines with histidine to form carnosine, a compound stored within skeletal muscle.
During high-intensity exercise, hydrogen ions accumulate and muscle pH falls. This can interfere with muscular contraction and contribute to fatigue and a loss of force or power. Carnosine acts as an intracellular buffer, helping the muscles manage these changes during demanding efforts.
Research suggests beta-alanine is most effective for high-intensity exercise lasting approximately one to four minutes, although benefits have been reported in some activities lasting from around 30 seconds to 10 minutes. This makes it particularly relevant to track cycling, rowing, swimming, middle-distance running, repeated intervals and functional fitness.
For endurance athletes, beta-alanine is less likely to benefit steady-paced aerobic exercise directly. Its value may be greater during high-intensity sections of training and racing, including steep climbs, surges, repeated accelerations and sprint finishes.
Beta-alanine works through consistent use rather than providing an immediate pre-workout effect. Research commonly uses daily supplementation for at least two to four weeks to increase muscle carnosine levels. A temporary tingling sensation, known as paraesthesia, can occur after larger individual servings. Divided doses or sustained-release products may help reduce this effect.
Our Beta Alanine collection brings together supplements and performance blends designed for regular use alongside a structured training and nutrition plan. Products should always be taken according to their specific directions.
Support your ability to maintain pace and power during demanding efforts with our Beta Alanine collection, developed for athletes training and competing at high intensity.
