Jo Meek - North Coast 500
500 miles from Inverness on the East Coast across to Applecross on the West Coast and then up the West Coast to Durness across to John O'Groats and back down along the very windy East Coast to Inverness Castle.
How did the cycle go?
I cycled with a friend. We did it in 6 days, cycling 505miles, 10000m of up, 39.5hrs moving time at an average speed of 12.5mph. We did from 70miles to 90miles a day and wild camped every night.
What fuel did you use?
We ate what we could to be honest. Covid meant lots of places were closed. I ate lots of energy bars and drink powders, fish and chips and peanuts. Not the healthiest diet and I certainly graved less beige food afterwards!
Why did you do the North Coast 500, any personal challenges?
It was an opportunity that arose pretty quickly, and I absolutely love to travel and explore by bike. The challenge was then to get a bike and some bike packs for the trip. I had to borrow and improvise but it all worked out in the end.
What do you have planned next?
Recovery! Cycling 500miles after running the Dartmoor Round (74miles) means my legs need to have some recovery now. My next race is Les Templiers in France in 1 month but I'm not booking anything up until nearer the time.
