Isothiocyanates (ITCs) are naturally occurring plant compounds formed from glucosinolates found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, broccoli sprouts, cabbage and watercress. Emerging research suggests ITC-rich supplements may support the body’s antioxidant defences, exercise recovery and adaptations to intense training.

Hard training increases the production of reactive oxygen species. While this is a normal part of exercise and adaptation, excessive oxidative stress may contribute to muscle damage, fatigue and slower recovery.

Isothiocyanates are formed when cruciferous vegetables are chopped, chewed or processed, allowing an enzyme called myrosinase to convert glucosinolates into active compounds. Sulforaphane, found particularly in broccoli and broccoli sprouts, is one of the most studied ITCs in sports science.

Sulforaphane activates cellular pathways involved in the body’s own antioxidant defence system, including Nrf2. Early human research suggests that sulforaphane and ITC-rich broccoli sprout products may help manage exercise-induced oxidative stress, support recovery and reduce muscle soreness following demanding exercise. Small studies have also reported lower lactate accumulation and improved performance during intense training, although research in athletes is still developing.
