ABOUT PROTEIN REBEL

No Slip. No Bounce. All Polarised. All Fun.

Stephen Lease was an avid runner equipped with all the running gear he could get his hands on, when he seemed to realise that runners weren’t wearing overpriced high-performance running glasses but just cheap pairs from discount stores. He saw the opportunity for stylish, fun, functional, affordable shades in the running community and launched Goodr.

Goodr was launched in March 2015 with a Kickstarter campaign, shipping badass sunnies from an apartment along with his high school friends and co-founders Ben Abell and Keri Blunt. For the first two years of Goodr, the trio worked full-time jobs whilst growing the brand to the success it is today.

Expanding to over 1,500 stores in 30 different countries, as well as collaborating with major brands such as Warner Bros, The Rolling Stones, and Dunkin’ Donuts, Goodr has become an overnight success. Their high quality sunnies have won several awards including:

  • Runner’s World Gear of the Year (twice!)
  • PGA Buyer’s Choice
  • Men’s Health Best Buy

And in CEO (Chief Executive Octopus) Stephen Lease’s words “We sell fun, not eyewear

Protein Rebel started in Africa where the founder Tim worked in a National Park in Zambia. There he learned how to catch termites to fry them up with some salt and pepper for a late-night snack. After finding most protein shakes left him feeling ill due to artificial ingredients and whey, Tim set out to make his own natural and sustainable protein powder.

After 18 months of development, 97 formulations, 3 different insect species and 2 cricket farms, Rebel Protein finally found the right formula for them. Protein Rebel’s main source of protein is Crickets, a superfood that are higher in protein than beef, chicken and pork and have a low impact on the environment. Their formula uses minimal all-natural ingredients sourced right from the UK, with no nasty chemicals or additives, and packaged in easy-to-recycle packaging.

Protein Rebel have even won several awards for their revolutionary protein powders including:

  • European Specialist Sports Nutrition Award for Most Sustainable Protein Powder
  • The UK’s toughest health food award - The Nourish Award in the high protein category
  • Men’s Fitness Magazine for the Recommended Protein Powder

WHY PROTEIN REBEL?

The majority of protein powders use Whey protein that derives from cows’ milk which is hard for the stomach to digest and can cause bloating and GI distress as a result. Protein Rebel instead uses pea and cricket protein which is easier to digest and have a low environmental impact due to cricket farms using a lot less resources and land than cow or soy farms. Whey and Soy based protein contributes to deforestation as natural habitats are cleared to make land for cows to graze or soy to be grown.

In fact, for every tub sold, Protein Rebel work with the World Land Trust to protect 1m² of threatened biologically-diverse habitat.

Protein Rebel reduce their environmental impact through farming, sourcing, manufacturing and packaging their products right here in the UK. This helps lower their travel miles and decrease CO₂ emissions. Protein Rebel manufactures their powders on sites that have been accredited by the BRCGs, the leading food safety body.

Their tubs are made from HDPE plastic which the most widely recycled plastic in the UK and is recycled by over 97% of UK councils. They cut out any unnecessary plastics including scoops and shaker bottles due to them creating more landfill plastic made using precious natural resources.

Every sustainable choice has been carefully thought out to make Protein Rebel one of the most sustainable protein powders on the market.

BENEFITS OF INSECT PROTEIN

Whey and Soy farmlands are often created after a process of deforestation and the destruction of natural wildlife habitats. This is due to large areas of land being needed for the soy to be grown or for cows to graze. More than 80,00 football pitches of rainforest are cleared each day to make room for cow pastures or soybean fields.

Soy is typically fed to Cows, whose milk is used to create Whey. Cows have a huge negative impact on the planet due to them releasing methane into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming. Animals including cows, are also notorious for contracting diseases, so are fed antibiotics to prevent said illnesses, however you are at risk of absorbing these diseases and antibiotics when consuming traditional animal protein.

Protein Rebel’s Cricket Protein may sound strange at first however, its benefits are undeniable:

Higher in Protein than beef, chicken and pork

Sustainably farmed in the UK

Easy on the stomach

Contains a natural prebiotic

Low environmental impact

Protein Rebel believe that the faster the world stops relying on traditional animal and dairy proteins, and moves towards a net zero future, the better. No compromise.
