Why is rest important?

Rest is key for anyone to live a healthy lifestyle and benefits us in so many different ways:

  • Improved mental health
  • Increased concentration and memory
  • Stronger immune system
  • Reduced stress
  • Improved mood
  • Better metabolism

For athletes, rest and recovery is key to a successful training routine. We know that regular exercise is good for us but it can also be hard on our bodies. Working out can put a lot of strain on our muscles and joints which can end up causing inflammation and pain. This is why it’s so important to allow time in your training schedule to let your body rest and heal itself.

WHAT IS RECOVERY NUTRITION?

As well as just resting and getting plenty of sleep, recovery nutrition is a great way to help your body recover after a tough workout. Using a combination of protein and carbohydrates, recovery bars, drinks and gels can help you to refuel and prepare for your next session.

PROTEIN:

  • Promotes growth and helps repair damaged cells and tissue.
  • Available from many food sources- most people can obtain enough protein from a regular varied diet.
  • People who engage in high intensity exercise require more protein in their diets.
  • Ingesting protein before, during, or after exercise can enhance recovery, immune function and growth to maintain lean body mass.

CARBOHYDRATES:

  • Replenish glycogen in the muscles that is lost during a workout.
  • Reduce muscle soreness.
  • Help to alleviate exercise-induced immunodepression.
  • Maintain blood sugar levels.

Recovery Bars vs Recovery Powders

Both products are designed to help your muscles recover using a blend of protein and carbs. Which is better? That’s up to you, both have the same benefits so it’s completely down to personal preference.

Recovery bars are conveniently sized to fit in your pocket and can go just about anywhere with you. We have created a Protein Bar Selection Box to help you discovery new bars.

Recovery drink powders however, need to be mixed with liquid, this is traditionally just water but why not try mixing into your favourite smoothie or even pancake batter for a treat that is not only delicious but good for you too!
